Mayer Center Study Tour 2008
May 20-June 4, 2008

Pilgrimage Art in Spain and the Americas:  Santiago de Compostela
Organized by Dr. Donna Pierce and Rosa Ramírez Carlson

This trip will follow the medieval pilgrimage route across northern Spain from the Pyrennes to Santiago de Compostela to study the impact of pilgrimage on the art of both the Europe and the Americas.  The group will follow the route of the pilgrims through the scenic Valleé d’Aspe in rural southern France, passing through the historic villages of Sainte-Marie Oloron, Accous, Sarrance, and Cette-Eygun.  The trip will continue over Somport Pass through the Pyrennes from France into Spain.  The group will stop in the medieval Spanish villages of Sos del Rey Católico, Puente de la Reina, Santo Domingo de la Calzada, Astorga, Villafranca del Bierzo and visit the great pilgrimage cathedrals of the cities of Burgos, Leon and, the final destination of Santiago de Compostela.  Art and history classes, Spanish language classes and guest lectures will be held throughout the trip.

Spain and the Americas: Art, History and Language
Organized by Dr. Donna Pierce and Rosa Ramírez Carlson

The 2005 Mayer Center Study Tour included visits to Avila, Salamanca, Ciudad Rodrigo, Valladolid, Zamora, Jarandilla de la Vera, Caceres, Trujillo, Guadalupe and Oropesa.  Formal art and history classes were taught by Dr. Donna Pierce, Spanish language classes taught by Jaime Gavin were available on a daily basis, and guest lectures were provided by Dra. Cristina Esteras, Dr. Jaime de Salas, Nancy Lopez, Tariana Navas-Nieves, and Conservator Kristy Jeffcoat.
